6 Mistakes That May Be Preventing You From Fixing Digestion, Supporting Your Liver, and Losing Weight

Addressing these foundational habits often makes a bigger difference than adding more supplements or following another restrictive diet.

6 Mistakes That May Be Preventing You From Fixing Digestion, Supporting Your Liver, and Losing Weight

Why the Foundations Matter

I talk to women every day who have tried everything.

They’ve cut calories. They’ve cut carbs. They’ve bought supplement after supplement.

Yet they’re still dealing with bloating, fatigue, weight gain, constipation, diarrhea, right-sided discomfort, or fatty liver.

The truth is that your liver doesn’t work by itself. It depends on your nervous system, thyroid, nutrition, and digestion all working together. When one area is struggling, the others often struggle too.

Here are the six biggest mistakes I see.

1. Ignoring Your Nervous System

Most people think stress only affects their mood.

It also affects digestion.

When your body is under chronic stress, it shifts into survival mode. Blood flow and energy are directed toward keeping you alert rather than supporting digestion and repair. That can slow stomach acid production, reduce digestive enzyme release, alter bile flow, and affect normal digestive function.

If your body never feels safe enough to prioritize repair, it becomes much harder to support healthy liver function over time.

Simple habits that may help include:

  • Taking slow walks after meals
  • Practicing deep breathing
  • Prioritizing quality sleep
  • Eating meals in a relaxed environment whenever possible

2. Taking Too Many Supplements

Supplements can absolutely have a place.

But more is not always better.

Every supplement you take still has to be metabolized and processed by your body. Instead of helping, taking large numbers of products without a clear purpose may simply create additional work for your liver.

I often encourage women to build a strong nutritional foundation first:

  • Balanced meals
  • Enough protein
  • Regular meal timing
  • Whole foods
  • Healthy lifestyle habits

Once those pieces are in place, supplements can be much more strategic.

3. Overlooking Your Thyroid

Your thyroid and liver work as a team.

The liver converts much of your thyroid hormone into its active form, while thyroid hormones help regulate metabolism, energy production, bile flow, and how efficiently your liver burns and transports fat.

When thyroid function is less than optimal, women may notice symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Dry skin
  • Feeling cold
  • Slower digestion

Supporting liver health and thyroid health together often makes much more sense than focusing on only one.

4. Ignoring Genetics Like MTHFR or PEMT

Genes such as MTHFR and PEMT don’t determine your future, but they may influence how efficiently certain pathways work.

These pathways are involved in:

  • Methylation
  • Glutathione production
  • Choline metabolism
  • Healthy bile production

When these pathways aren’t functioning optimally, some people may have greater difficulty maintaining healthy bile flow and efficiently moving fat through the liver.

While genetics are only one piece of the picture, understanding them can sometimes help explain why standard advice hasn’t worked.

5. Skipping Breakfast or Fasting

Fasting has become incredibly popular.

But it isn’t the right approach for everyone.

Many of the women I work with have fatty liver, thyroid concerns, or have had their gallbladder removed. In these situations, going long periods without eating may increase stress hormones and make it harder to maintain steady energy throughout the day.

Your liver needs a consistent supply of nutrients to carry out hundreds of metabolic functions.

For many women, eating balanced meals every three to four hours provides better support than long periods without food.

6. Not Eating Enough Protein

Protein is one of the most overlooked nutrients for liver health.

The amino acids found in protein are used to build:

  • Detoxification enzymes
  • Glutathione
  • Healthy bile components
  • Transport proteins that help move fat through the liver

Very low-protein diets, juice cleanses, or chronically undereating may leave the body without the building blocks it needs for normal liver function.

Instead of fearing protein, aim to include a quality protein source at every meal.

What I Recommend Instead

Rather than trying random advice from social media or buying another supplement, start with the basics that actually support your metabolism.

Focus on:

  • Eating balanced meals consistently
  • Prioritizing protein
  • Supporting healthy digestion
  • Reducing ultra-processed foods
  • Managing stress
  • Supporting healthy liver function through everyday habits

These foundational changes are often where women notice the biggest improvements.

A Simple Step-by-Step Plan

If you’re tired of guessing what to do next, that’s exactly why I created my 28-Day Liver Revival.

It’s a practical, step-by-step program designed to help women support liver health, digestion, metabolism, and energy without extreme diets or complicated protocols.

More than 1,700 women have gone through the program and improved their digestion, energy, weight, and overall well-being after finally focusing on the foundations..
