Why Is My Weight Stuck Even Though I'm Doing Everything Right?
By Lisa Winbourn, Certified Functional Nutritionist · June 26, 2026
Eating healthy, exercising, and still not losing weight? Learn some common reasons your weight may be stuck and practical steps you can take to move forward.

Quick Answer
Can I be honest?
When a woman tells me...
"I'm doing everything right."
I believe her.
Because most of the women I work with really are trying.
They're meal prepping.
Walking every day.
Reading labels.
Drinking water.
Turning down dessert.
Making grilled chicken...again.
And somehow...
The scale acts like it didn't get the memo. If that's you, I want you to know something. Your body isn't trying to ruin your life. It's usually responding to something you haven't been told to look at yet.
"Everything Right" Might Not Actually Be the Right Things
This isn't your fault.
We've been given the same advice for decades.
Eat less.
Exercise more.
Don't eat carbs.
Skip breakfast.
Count calories.
Repeat.
But what if you've become really good at following advice that wasn't designed for your body?
Let's Play Detective for a Minute...
When someone tells me their weight won't budge, these are the first things I start wondering.
Not...
"How much cardio are you doing?"
More like...
Are You Eating Enough?
I know.
That sounds backwards.
But it's incredibly common for women to tell me they're eating 1,200 calories...
...and they're exhausted.
Cold.
Thinking about food all day.
Waking up at 3 AM.
Your body still needs energy to make hormones, repair tissue, support your liver, maintain muscle, and simply keep you alive. Sometimes eating too little makes healthy habits much harder to maintain.
How Much Protein Are You Actually Eating?
Most women think they're eating plenty.
Then we add it up.
Breakfast?
8 grams.
Lunch?
12 grams.
Dinner?
18 grams.
That's probably not enough to help maintain muscle and keep you satisfied throughout the day.
Protein isn't just for bodybuilders.
It's for women who want energy.
Are You Sleeping?
You can't out-diet terrible sleep.
If you're waking up every night...
Running on coffee...
Dragging yourself through the afternoon...
Your body is already working overtime.
How's Your Liver?
Your liver is involved in hundreds of normal metabolic processes. It helps regulate blood sugar, process hormones, produce bile for fat digestion, and activate thyroid hormone. That doesn't mean your liver is the reason you're not losing weight. But if your liver isn't functioning optimally, it's one piece of the picture that's worth paying attention to.
Are You Always Stressed?
Your body doesn't know the difference between:
"I'm running from a bear."
And...
"I answered 47 emails, skipped lunch, and my teenager just learned to drive."
Stress affects sleep.
Sleep affects hunger.
Hunger affects food choices.
Everything is connected.
Are You Building Muscle?
This one gets overlooked all the time.
Muscle isn't just about looking toned.
It's metabolically active tissue.
Strength training also helps preserve muscle while losing weight, which is important for long-term health and metabolism.
Could There Be Something Medical Going On?
Sometimes the answer isn't lifestyle at all.
Things like:
- Thyroid disorders
- Insulin resistance
- Perimenopause
- Certain medications
- Sleep apnea
- PCOS
...can all make weight loss more challenging.
If you've truly been doing "everything right" and nothing is changing, it's worth having a conversation with your healthcare provider.
Here's Something I Wish Every Woman Knew...
The scale only measures one thing.
Your relationship with gravity.
That's it.
It doesn't measure:
More energy.
Better digestion.
Improved sleep.
Lower inflammation.
Stronger muscles.
Healthier habits.
Those changes often happen before significant weight loss does. And they're worth celebrating because they're signs your body may be responding in positive ways.
What I Focus on First
Instead of asking...
"How can I eat less?"
I ask...
- Am I eating enough protein?
- Am I eating enough overall?
- Am I eating every 3 to 4 hours?
- Am I supporting my liver?
- Am I sleeping?
- Am I strength training?
- Am I managing stress?
Because when those foundations improve...
Weight loss often becomes a whole lot easier.
The Bottom Line
If you've been doing "everything right"...
Maybe the answer isn't trying harder.
Maybe it's looking at the right things.
Sometimes the problem isn't that you're lazy.
Or unmotivated.
Or lacking willpower.
Sometimes your body is simply asking for more support instead of more restriction.
And honestly...
That's a much kinder place to start.
Ready to Stop Guessing?
If you've been stuck for months (or years), it might be time to stop chasing the next diet and start supporting the systems that actually influence your metabolism. Inside Metabolism Tuneup, I teach women how to nourish their bodies with enough protein, balanced meals, and practical strategies that support energy, liver health, digestion, and sustainable weight loss. Because sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn't doing more.
It's finally doing the right things.
Common questions
Why won't my weight go down even though I eat healthy?
Weight is influenced by many factors beyond food quality, including calorie intake, muscle mass, sleep, stress, hormones, medications, activity levels, and certain medical conditions.
Can stress stop weight loss?
Chronic stress can influence sleep, appetite, food choices, and physical activity, all of which may affect body weight over time.
Should I eat less if the scale isn't moving?
Not necessarily. If you've been eating very little for a long time, further restriction may not be the best next step. Looking at your overall nutrition, protein intake, and lifestyle habits is often more helpful.
How long should I wait before changing my plan?
If you've consistently followed a well-balanced plan for several weeks without progress, it may be time to reassess your nutrition, activity, sleep, stress, or discuss possible medical causes with your healthcare provider.
